Global Childhood Obesity

Global childhood obesity is a huge problem that society is dealing with worldwide. This is something that is very important to us as a whole. According to the World Health Organization, in 2010 there were over 42 million children under the age of 5 that were obese. This number is alarming and requires immediate action.

Global childhood obesity has several causes to it and many, if not all, can be prevented. These causes consist of malnutrition, sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity, increase in food production and consumption. All of these issues should be worked on because childhood obesity leads to disabilities, premature death and developing non-communicable diseases.

There are several things that can be done with trying to control and decrease childhood obesity at the global, environmental and individual level. School nutrition is one thing that can be changed. Most children eat one or even two of their meals at school each day, making these meals healthier would help the overall nutrition of the children. Another aspect would be increasing physical activity in our school systems and even in our home life. This involves the school making physical education a mandatory part of the school system. Also, in our home lives being a more active family will also help the obesity rates of the children. Healthier foods is also an aspect that needs to change in our everyday lifestyle; adding fruits and vegetables to our diets.

There are many different avenues that can be taken when it comes to changing global childhood obesity for the better. If we start now with changing ourselves and educating our families, the change will begin and continue little by little. As of now we are spreading the word and making individual changes to eventually change the population as a whole; this is only the beginning.
